Managing any project can be challenging in itself; managing restoration work is different altogether. First, you never quite know what you are going to deal with until you expose your work area. Much can be predetermined with experience but a good deal is a black art learnt from a lifetime of working on older properties where modern rules did not apply when building took place. This service is provided on an hourly basis in conjunction with your labour and material quotations.
Problem solving
The secret is having a solution to a problem before ever consulting your client. Present your solution as you explain the detail to be overcome.
Ageing your property.
Before we start a project we want to know its approximate age, and as much of its history as we can. To find out let’s start in the roof:
The one area unlikely to have been changed over the years is your roof. It’s here that our voyage will begin, one that will make you fall in love with your home all over again, as we find out its secrets together. It’s most welcome to have a client involved in a ‘hands on’ sense so we can explain our finding and your property’s history.
Conservation work and listed building consent
We have good relationships with local conservation officers. This will enable us to work together to achieve your goal, in a stress free and united manor.
Conservation building is like a detective novel! You discover history, you work with detail maybe untouched for centuries (that must be the most rewarding part of my work, the “who was here before me” thought).
What you must do is to preserve historic detailing and building techniques not just replace them.
If it’s new it’s new; don’t try to make it look old when it’s not, let the 21st century work with the 15th century.
Project and man management
We will take the strain of structural drawings, listed building consent planning and drawings from you. We will deal with all the varied artisans used on your project so you have one anchor man - one person - to talk too.
